A starting point for congregations, public programs, and organizational gatherings.
Dr. Corey J. Henderson is a public health scholar, speaker, and writer whose work examines historical trauma and its reverberating effects on Black health, communities, identity, and public life. He brings research into conversation with history, theology, and lived experience.
Through Roots & Repair, he invites educators, congregations, and community organizations to connect historical understanding with reflection, community strengths, and practical action.
His 2017 doctoral dissertation at Morgan State University explored the lived experiences of Black Baltimore residents during the transition from segregation to integration. The qualitative study identified themes of harm alongside themes of resilience.
The Sotero-Henderson conceptual model connects historical policies and practices with trauma responses, community conditions, and intergenerational transmission. The study offers a Baltimore-specific foundation for discussion, not a claim that every Black community or individual has the same experience.
“Historical trauma is not confined to the past. We can begin by naming what happened, examining what continues, and recognizing the strengths our communities carry. Roots & Repair creates a place to learn, reflect, and choose what we can do together.”

WHAT TO EXPECT
A gathering shaped around your community.
Start with a planning conversation about your audience, goals, and setting. Together, we select a topic and format, confirm the scope and fee, and prepare a session with clear takeaways.
Participants can continue learning through the Roots & Repair app, with sourced stories, discussion prompts, and brief policy, behavior, and community actions.
Care is part of the process.
Participation is voluntary. People may pass or step away. No one is asked to represent an entire community or share a personal trauma story.
These are educational and facilitated discussions, not mental health diagnosis or treatment. The aim is understanding, connection, and thoughtful action; individual experiences and outcomes vary.
LET’S PLAN SOMETHING MEANINGFUL

Tell us about your group and what you hope to explore. An inquiry starts a conversation; it does not reserve a date or commit you to a fee.
